What is Rett Syndrome?
Rett Syndrome is a neurological disease/movement disorder that primarily affects girls. It is the most severe form of autism. These little girls are born appearing perfectly healthy, but then between the ages of 1-3 years old, they begin to lose their basic motor skills. They can’t run, often can’t walk, use their hands and say few if any words. They are essentially trapped inside living bodies. It is caused by one tiny gene mutation that stalls the production of a critical brain protein.
Every 90 minutes another little girl is born with Rett Syndrome, however there is hope for a cure. Research has shown that Rett Syndrome is potentially REVERSIBLE once protein levels are normalized. The only thing standing in the way of curing Rett Syndrome is the funding for the research it will take to find that cure. Girl Power 2 Cure is dedicated to that goal.
